The Austral Wheel Race, run in Melbourne is the world’s oldest running track event. Starting in 1897 Coolgardie had its own Austral, the ‘Coolgardie Austral’, which was later renamed the ‘Westral’ and continues today.

From 1963 to 1989, the Westral Wheel Race was held annually on the velodrome of Midland Oval and since 1990 it has been run at the Midvale Speeddome.
